Top 10 Favorite Art and Fashion Photographers from Detroit!

The photographers that have been able to showcase the way Detroiters view their city everyday. Beyond the sunny days against the Detroit strait, looking from the Canada side. The grit and grind of our distinct culture, ruble of the streets, abandoned liquor stores. Illuminates the beauty of the fallen as it rises again. The perfect backdrop in the privilege to capture local musicians, ambassadors, community leaders and beauties that pump this cities heart beat for the citizens and those dwelling past 8 mile too. Finding that slight perspective you notice for a split second when you look up, drive by, ride past on the people mover or off its platform, even on the top of a hollowed out building. Finding the best view and composition to showcase the most inspiring city. Using this art form as duty to be the eyes of Detroit, represent to the rest of the country we are no people to play with. I bring you my quintessential list of Detroit photographers whose work continues to soar, bring together and collaborate our independent art world that can only be bred, in Detroit.

  1. Jenny Risher @jennyrisher

Currently my favorite photographer from the city, though only known to me recently. Going to her show at the DIA, I was aware of the exhibition before I knew about the artist bringing it. When I finally took the time to find out who the photographer was and when I saw that she was Woman I was intrigued and quickly caught up. Stepped up for the culture when we didn’t even know we needed it with the D-Cypherd exhibition and now book. The streets have accepted her, an Asian American who has fully immersed into the Detroit Hip Hop scene and falling in love with it like your local dope dealer has. Her portraits pierce into the souls of the MC’s of the city, including local radio stations host and DJ’s.

  2.    J. Milhouse @j.milhouse

A true artist in the sense, his haunting scenery and moody portraits elevate his work comparable to those during the Harlem Renaissance, as Detroit goes through one of its own. Modest yet bold, uses color and lights like a crayon. Self taught hobbyist, whose eye allowed for advancement in the field.

  3.   Piper Carter @pipercarter

This list could not exist I believe without this woman’s iconic eye and feat before Detroit is now, New York was the only place an artist could be. Like most women from Detroit, a force, leaping and conquering what seems like mountains to most Detroiters. Iconic imagery documenting the Marilyn Monroe or Sammy Davis Jr. of the hip-hop era. But she offers so much more than that.

  4.  Jeremy Deputat @jeremydeputat

The Eminem of the photography world and the only one that photographs Eminem. A cultural chameleon with a laid back demeanor that makes his subjects comfortable enough to let out some of their vulnerability. His style in catching their truth result in his subjects as fierce warriors. Somehow he can bring a soul to the surface, you have to just Trust The Shooter.

  5.  Joe Gall @Camerajesus

The deity himself, a rockstar among the art world here. Girls whisper when they get a glimpse of his height and hair at a Friday night gallery opening. Behind the physique, coined urban explorer, snapping epic landscapes from heights that have you wondering how. Detroit staple, if you are a photographer or not you know Camera Jesus and you want one of his prints.

  6.  Bre’ann Whlgn White @breannwhlgn

In her Instagram bio she states her work, accolades and contact information like most, and at the tail end it was necessary for her to state that she is a black girl. I found that extremely relatable and very hopeful at the same time. For this statement means to me that because of her highly elevated talent in editorial photography, has made it so, when businesses or others inquire her for work are surprised that she is, a black girl. Part of the high art collective known as The Whlgn, I am excited for what is in store for the future of Bre’ann White in photography around the World.

  7.  Miro @Trancefield
Not much known from Instagram collaborator whose crisp dystopian depictions of the city grab an audience and a genre. As more abandoned buildings get bought up and renovated and downtown becoming more crowded and touristy what will Miro have left to explore.

  8. Chris and Michelle Gerard @thegerards

Badass husband and wife duo, whose names I am sure you have seen in the corner of the pictures on Curbed Detroit and Eater Detroit websites. However, I feel that these two will do down in history for the stories they capture of businessmen and woman shaping the community and of the diverse Detroit Rollerblading scene.

  9. Davide Anderson @davidefoto

Model photographer that turns an amateur to into an elite instantly. Bringing confidence to his subject and finds the art in their structure. New Yorker that has found a home in Pontiac, MI. His professionalism, passion and diligence in crafting his work is easily noticed.

 10. For this spot I kept going back and forth between a rolodex of insanely talented photographers that see the same thing that I see when I look out my window in the morning. The beauty, that not enough get to and really see. There are so many talented image capturers and creators in this city in just this one medium, that is was hard to pick. But it doesn’t matter who, cause if you are living and shooting in Detroit I have immense respect for you. It’s not easy being a Detroiter, and on top that being an artist, trying against the norm to make beauty happen for self and brave enough to bring the World in to see, it thanks you.
