I’m sure from the title of this blog post, it is clear that I am bringing yet another Top 10 list. In this edition I felt the need as I make my directorial debut on my first feature film to list off my favorite female filmmakers. I feel that it is so important to glorify and praise these talented and hardworking ladies as much as possible, because the mainstream media won’t. Visionaries of some of most iconic, brilliant, and culturally relevant films to come, and I bet you didn’t know a woman wrote, directed, or produced it. My hope is one day we can be at a place where every other movie I scroll past on Netflix is directed by a woman. I have comprised this list in order, from the filmmakers that have paved the way and knocked down barriers to the up and coming visionaries shaking up the game for the future of female. Now not every name on this list has actually had the title of director, but I feel if you wrote, produced, and are there to coordinate every day on set that counts as a filmmaker in my eyes. So keep reading for the full list of my favorite female filmmakers. 1. Betty Thomas A true OG of the game, working in almost every facet of production, who has brought of some of the classics in American film. Working with some of the greatest actors, including Eddie Murphy, twice, in I Spy and in Doctor Doolittle, the audacity one must have to direct the legendary comedy king. She has also held the reigns on some of my childhood favorite feel good movies, including The Brady Bunch Movie, and John Tucker Must Die. Along with being an executive producer and actress on a slew of other favorites that is just too long of a list to name. Betty has carved a reputation that has really put her in a league of her own. 2. Neema Barnette I admit it, and I ashamed that I did not know about Neema before writing this list. A pioneer in the game for all women directors and producers. At the helm of some of the most culturally important television shows such as The Cosby Show and A Different World, just a couple of my favorite shows. And now, at almost 69 breaking down doors as a director on shows like Queen Sugar, Being Mary Jane, Luke Cage, and Love Is. Proving there is no stopping the eye of a pro. 3. Amy Heckerling Writer and director that brought use the 90's mainstay Clueless. That could be all I mention of her filmography and that would be enough to include her in my top 10 list. However, it must be mentioned that Amy is the sole proprietor that has given us the genre that is high school movies; one of my favorite guilty pleasure genres. Creator of the legendary film Fast Times at Ridgemont High, the prototype of all high school movies that have came after it. Not to mention the mastermind behind Looks Who Talking, the idea coming to her while pregnant, brilliant. As well as fan favorites that include, Loser, and TV shows like Gossip Girl and The Carrie Diaries. How else could I thank Amy for all that she has done. 4. Catherin Hardwicke There are those certain movies that you love so much that you have to watch them again every few years. For me, recently Lords of Dogtown was it for me, I finally was able to find it on a streaming platform and to my surprise, when it displayed the name of the director, it was that of a woman. Catherine’s films are staples in the industry. In her first indie hit, Thirteen gave us rouge filming like never seen before and has influenced many movies we see today. As well as the vampire hit Twilight, and a few cutting edge TV shows. 5. Karen Kusama As mentioned in my Top 10 Favorite Women Heroes That are Not Wonder Woman blog post, growing up Michelle Rodriquez was a huge inspiration to me, almost like my idol through my middle school and high school years. In her acting debut in GirlFight, had the must influence on me than any of her other films. Written and directed by female filmmaker Karen Kusama. Not only did she discover Michelle for Girlfight, it was also her first feature length film as a director. Where she able to accurately and authentically portray the misunderstandings of a tomboy girl trying to fight and win, figuratively and literally in a male dominated world. Karen was my first introduction of the possibility that female filmmakers are able win on this platform by staying true to real women characters. 6. Patty Jenkins Two words, Wonder Woman. This epic, female empowerment was executed perfectly by Patty on a scale that many aspiring female filmmakers thought wouldn't be achievable. I am so glad the studio heads over at Warner Brothers decided to have a woman director take the reigns on this story, and they chose well with Patty Jenkins. It is evident that her vision is clear and her ability to accurately portray women characters is strong as seen in her other work, like the Oscar winning film Monster. 7. Diablo Cody The surprise indie hit of Juno during my senior year of high school as I was being propelled into to college in pursuit of education for my film career, was just the inspo I needed. A young, quirky writer that was able to relate to so many facets of people we didn’t even know was missing from Hollywood. A niche she perfected and others after tried to duplicate. Her woman lead films is what we need more of and I know she has so much more up her sleeve to bless us with. 8. Tina Fey Ok so she has never ever really directed something before, but I don’t care I am still putting this Goddess on this list. This two-time Golden Globes winner has made a mark with her work, writing and producing some of the best movies and television shows as well as acting in them. A true boss in the industry and worked her way to be perceived as an even player in the field amongst the best. Bringing the gold that is Mean Girls and 30 Rock, which will go down in history as the best written work to be portrayed on screen, in my opinion. 9. Elizabeth Meriwether Clever ain’t the word, this woman’s writing skills slays us all. If you ever seen New Girl you know, whether you’re a girl, guy, young or old it's easy to love and laugh to this hilarious show. Creator, writer, director of a few episodes and even actress brings a breath of fresh air to writing, female characters, and ensemble cast's. Bravo, can’t wait to see more work from Liz. 10. Sydney Freeland A few months back I stumbled upon the movie Deidra & Laney Rob a Train, a Netflix original film that just won my heart. Partly because the two lead actors are young black women but also the storyline was so unbelievably enduring. A highly relatable story that has never been told through this perspective before, and one Hollywood Studios would never have the guts to produce and fund, thank you Netflix! The up and coming director beautifully executed this film and I can’t wait to see the future of Sydney's work. Thanks for taking the time to read the Top 10 list of my favorite female filmmakers and stayed tuned for behind the scenes footage of our short film currently in production.Top 10 Ways to Save Money as a Freelancer in Detroit 1. Get a members card at a casino in the city For the gamblers and non-gamblers associated that live in close proximity to one of the three casinos in the city, can greatly benefit for getting a casino member card. I in no way condone gambling, yet if it is something that you do once in a while or have a family member that frequents the casinos to spend for fun (cause they can), consider getting a member card for some of the food perks that go along with it. A member card at a casino allows you to earn points while you play, you just insert the card into a machine or give it to a dealer while you play. The more you play and spend, the more points you get. Casino’s also entice card holding, frequent going members by mailing out deals and offers, as well as crediting their account with a free $5-10 dollar bet or more a week. The credits including whatever points you may have obtained playing, can add up and be used as reward play or you can use the credits at any of the respective casinos food court areas and some restaurants. It’s like the best arcade ever, but since real money is used rather than tokens you get better perks. Strapped on cash for food for the week? Just check your member account for the new week, either online or at the kiosk in the casino to see how much money your points convert to, to be used towards their food places. In my opinion, MotorCity Casino has the best food options for your credits, with restaurant’s like Little Caesar pizza, all day breakfast at The Lodge Diner, sandwiches and burgers at the Grand River Deli or variety of selections at the Assembly Line Buffet. MGM Casino is a close second with their huge buffet stocked with a wide variety of selections, and the newly added National Coney Island to the Breeze Dining Court. Greektown Casino (or is it Jack Casino now) recently received a food court upgrade called Monroe Market that I have yet to experience for myself. In addition to the play to eat aspect of the membership, during the week and holidays, casinos hand out giveaways of an assortment of treats for its members. Lastly, for those 21 and up who are not big gamblers and not interested in doing the whole membership thing, casinos provide other amenities just for flashing your ID. Complimentary water, soda, coffee, and even hot chocolate to indulge in, stationed all throughout the casino floor. Although its shitty and mouth wash cup sized drinks, you can’t dispute free. 2. Daily food deals The days of the week can mean something different to everyone, for each day there is something different to to get excited about. Whether it’s a popular saying or a trendy action. I just thank God for restaurants using this logic to provide food deals to their customers each day. If you do some extensive research at some of your favorite eateries in the city, you can study their menu to see which days of the week they may offer deals and discounts. My go to’s are: Monday, after 10pm, get an hour of bowling, a slice a pizza and a soda or beer for only $7 at The Garden Bowl. Tuesday, famously Taco Tuesday at my favorite taqueria, Lupita’s in Mexican town. Where you can sometimes get .50 cent tacos, but bring cash. Wednesday, half off large pizzas at Nikki’s Pizza which is pretty substantial even if shared among friends. Thursdays, you can find happy hours at a slew of bars accompanied by Karaoke. As for the weekend, I hope you have a date or a really good friend to pay for a nice dinner on Friday, a slice at a show Saturday at El Club and a boozy brunch early on Sunday or wait 45 minutes in agony---to get you by for the next week of daily deals. 3. Delete meat and shop at Aldi Cooking your meals rather than going out is a great way to save money. To further stretch you money even more, try ditching meat, often the most expensive item on the receipt. In this day in age where there we have Pinterest, Google, and the Food Network Channel, it’s not hard to find a delicious vegetarian recipes. Also, when you go out of your way to shop at non brand name stores like Aldi, you’re saving on average $2.00/ item. Plus, it is so comforting knowing that stores like Aldi, ok just Aldi, are committed to only selling products that are GMO free. There cute boutique, European vibe store always leaves me spending less on groceries. 4. Art gallery openings or networking events Maybe you’re not really into the art thing, or pretending to care what other people do for money. However, if you are able to fake it for just a night, drag a friend along and go to your local art opening or networking event. Usually at these occasions, especially at an art opening it is expected for their to be open bar of either wine or beer, and if real fancy, cheese, fruit, and crackers to accompany. At network events, there is a bit more involved into getting those free perks, like singing a paper, getting a name tag, listening to people speak and usually a cash bar….womp, womp, womp. Yet, the food is a bit more substantial, but be weary vegans and vegetarians for slim, and possibly unseasoned options. 5. The Dollar Store It may seem like the obvious choice, but with the abundance of Dollar Stores in the area, it’s easy to bypass the obvious choice for money savings. However, dollars stores can’t all be treated the same way, because they are not! You have your Dollar Castles, (with a C or a K) or some other name to that extent. A sorry excuse for a dollar store, filled with a bunch of gaudy decorations and diabetes socks that nobody under 75 would want. The main names in the dollar store game are Family Dollar and Dollar Tree. Among the two, Dollar Tree is the obvious choice, I mean everything is a dollar you really can’t beat it. However if you are looking for something that you would need to get at somewhere like Target, but are weary of the price tag that comes with such a famous retailer. Don’t hesitate to step into that Family Dollar (depending on which location you attend) for essentials like shower curtains or basket organizers that are cheaply made but also cute enough to do the job for as long as it will last. 6. Potluck with friends In times of need lean on your friends. Join forces to create communal spaces to share food, internet, Netflix passwords, clothes and whatever else you may need to make it through to your next pay day. I personally love doing weekly potlucks with a good group of friends. Not too many peeps to ensure enough food for even the hungriest one of the group, but just enough so that the extra food on hand makes a huge difference to the meal. The true make of it are the friends, the love put into it your dish, the conversations, and memories. More than any extra money for food could buy. Using whatever ingredients you have left in the cabinets and pantry, you’d be surprise what can be pulled together for a side dish at the weekly Sunday potluck meal. Flex your culinary muscle to friends or try a delicious dish you would never thought you'd like, all while building a community and getting by until the next day. 7. Grocery store membership & bottle returns When trying to save money, food is the number one culprit breaking your budget that you must get under control. It goes beyond buying your groceries instead of going out, but actually making the food, not wasting it (cause your wasting money), finding multiple uses for it and using every possible resource available to you to bring your food costs down. Grocery store membership cards seem like the only you can actual get the advertised sale price these days. It’s free to sign up, and if you don’t physically have the card with you most retailers will let you type in a phone number associated with the membership. Like most other memberships, be prepared to receive a slew of discounts and deals in either you mailbox or inbox. Sometimes coupons can be worth the cut and save, however if you aren’t a family of four or more, and don’t have room to keep a stock of food it may not be worth it. Also, lets not forget we are in Michigan, and we are like the only state that can get ten cents for each bottle returned to a store selling the brand. 8. Gift card trade in’s So a family member got you a gift card to Aeropostale and your 25 years old. No offense for those that wear Aeropostale at that age or above, but typically it is for adolescents and pre-teens. What do you do? Let it sit in your wallet until you meet a young person to re-gift to. Or, you can now go into a check cashing establishment or online reseller to sell the unwanted gift card. Unfortunately not for the amount of the gift card, typically 10% or more, less of the amount. However if you are really in a bind for some extra cash, this is a great way to get some money from those unwanted merchandise cards. 9. Poshmark and Plato’s Closet Selling electronics, jewelry, clothes and even makeup you have lying around that hasn't been used in the past 90 days and aren’t planning to be used any time soon, is one of the best ways to get some extra money as a freelancer. Flea markets, resell stores and even apps are great resources to minimize your stuff while racking in some cash. When I came back from California and looking to make some extra money after spending two months on the road with not much to spare after the trip. I took my love for thrift shopping and combined it with the app Poshmark to make some extra money. The effort you put into running your closet reflects how much money you will make, selling clothes online and on apps can be a long game. Over the past four years of using Poshmark I have sold over $700 worth of stuff! Resell shops like Plato’s Closet are also great because you can get cold hard cash that day for new or gently use clothes that are currently in style, for those impulse shoppers out there. 10. Trade in the car for Lyft and Zip Car If you in the city or another metro Detroit city where you are in close proximity to where you work, a place to get groceries and other necessities for your everyday life. Then maybe it’s time to ditch the car and really start saving those extra bucks. Just because this is the auto capital of the world doesn’t mean you have to have a car. In 2018 we have access to a plethora of ride sharing options to choose from. I’ve personally have used and been satisfied with Lyft and the Zip Car service. If I need a quick ride, or need use a car to run important errands or go on a day trip I know there is Lyft and Zip Car readily available for my transportation needs. It is a way to still have access to mobile transportation on your terms without the stress and money of owning a car and pay insurance for it…..especially in Detroit! I had the pleasure of attending the must see art exhibit of the new year, from my good friend Nic Notion as he debuted his latest work; Amerixan Notion. His mixed use of his paintings and almost holographic like photographs. Collaborating with other Detroit artist to make this vision of Amerixan come alive, and did so masterfully. It was a hit, the show was overflowing with magnetic energy. Artists, sprawled all across the metropolitan came out to support and be inspired by the vision cast from budding artist Nic Notion. Amerixan Notion will be on display at Playground Detroit until March 24th. If you absolutely cannot make it, (photos and video do it no justice) but you want to support click here. Top 10 Favorite Art and Fashion Photographers from Detroit!
The photographers that have been able to showcase the way Detroiters view their city everyday. Beyond the sunny days against the Detroit strait, looking from the Canada side. The grit and grind of our distinct culture, ruble of the streets, abandoned liquor stores. Illuminates the beauty of the fallen as it rises again. The perfect backdrop in the privilege to capture local musicians, ambassadors, community leaders and beauties that pump this cities heart beat for the citizens and those dwelling past 8 mile too. Finding that slight perspective you notice for a split second when you look up, drive by, ride past on the people mover or off its platform, even on the top of a hollowed out building. Finding the best view and composition to showcase the most inspiring city. Using this art form as duty to be the eyes of Detroit, represent to the rest of the country we are no people to play with. I bring you my quintessential list of Detroit photographers whose work continues to soar, bring together and collaborate our independent art world that can only be bred, in Detroit.
Currently my favorite photographer from the city, though only known to me recently. Going to her show at the DIA, I was aware of the exhibition before I knew about the artist bringing it. When I finally took the time to find out who the photographer was and when I saw that she was Woman I was intrigued and quickly caught up. Stepped up for the culture when we didn’t even know we needed it with the D-Cypherd exhibition and now book. The streets have accepted her, an Asian American who has fully immersed into the Detroit Hip Hop scene and falling in love with it like your local dope dealer has. Her portraits pierce into the souls of the MC’s of the city, including local radio stations host and DJ’s. 2. J. Milhouse @j.milhouse A true artist in the sense, his haunting scenery and moody portraits elevate his work comparable to those during the Harlem Renaissance, as Detroit goes through one of its own. Modest yet bold, uses color and lights like a crayon. Self taught hobbyist, whose eye allowed for advancement in the field. 3. Piper Carter @pipercarter This list could not exist I believe without this woman’s iconic eye and feat before Detroit is now, New York was the only place an artist could be. Like most women from Detroit, a force, leaping and conquering what seems like mountains to most Detroiters. Iconic imagery documenting the Marilyn Monroe or Sammy Davis Jr. of the hip-hop era. But she offers so much more than that. 4. Jeremy Deputat @jeremydeputat The Eminem of the photography world and the only one that photographs Eminem. A cultural chameleon with a laid back demeanor that makes his subjects comfortable enough to let out some of their vulnerability. His style in catching their truth result in his subjects as fierce warriors. Somehow he can bring a soul to the surface, you have to just Trust The Shooter. 5. Joe Gall @Camerajesus The deity himself, a rockstar among the art world here. Girls whisper when they get a glimpse of his height and hair at a Friday night gallery opening. Behind the physique, coined urban explorer, snapping epic landscapes from heights that have you wondering how. Detroit staple, if you are a photographer or not you know Camera Jesus and you want one of his prints. 6. Bre’ann Whlgn White @breannwhlgn In her Instagram bio she states her work, accolades and contact information like most, and at the tail end it was necessary for her to state that she is a black girl. I found that extremely relatable and very hopeful at the same time. For this statement means to me that because of her highly elevated talent in editorial photography, has made it so, when businesses or others inquire her for work are surprised that she is, a black girl. Part of the high art collective known as The Whlgn, I am excited for what is in store for the future of Bre’ann White in photography around the World. 7. Miro @Trancefield Not much known from Instagram collaborator whose crisp dystopian depictions of the city grab an audience and a genre. As more abandoned buildings get bought up and renovated and downtown becoming more crowded and touristy what will Miro have left to explore. 8. Chris and Michelle Gerard @thegerards Badass husband and wife duo, whose names I am sure you have seen in the corner of the pictures on Curbed Detroit and Eater Detroit websites. However, I feel that these two will do down in history for the stories they capture of businessmen and woman shaping the community and of the diverse Detroit Rollerblading scene. 9. Davide Anderson @davidefoto Model photographer that turns an amateur to into an elite instantly. Bringing confidence to his subject and finds the art in their structure. New Yorker that has found a home in Pontiac, MI. His professionalism, passion and diligence in crafting his work is easily noticed. 10. For this spot I kept going back and forth between a rolodex of insanely talented photographers that see the same thing that I see when I look out my window in the morning. The beauty, that not enough get to and really see. There are so many talented image capturers and creators in this city in just this one medium, that is was hard to pick. But it doesn’t matter who, cause if you are living and shooting in Detroit I have immense respect for you. It’s not easy being a Detroiter, and on top that being an artist, trying against the norm to make beauty happen for self and brave enough to bring the World in to see, it thanks you. My Experience: A Woman Behind the Scenes in Video Productions:
Camera operators, grips, and production assistants; Some of the video production freelance jobs of those crazy enough to search on the daily at classifieds and just about anywhere someone could post, seeking assistance (for a low wage it always seems). When the work is done and your job commended, your left with inconsistent paychecks 30 days or more later, some from the biggest corporations in the industry that flat out ignore you and your payment, indefinitely. Left with no clear communication, on what they don’t seem to understand is your sole livelihood. The struggle just to take a step on set to a passion that you don’t want to give up, just because you don’t live in New York or California. Either way you go, to make it, is going to be tough. Unless there is a name in the game you know willing to help you, luck is your next best bet. Stubborn bullhorns can’t stop charging, but halted to the back for not having equipment, a truck, being a female professional, and to add a cherry on top, being black, it becomes a sport like snowboarding. Coming to the realization that the industry you are trying to break into is a privilege and no matter my degree, my experience, and qualifications I find myself likely not to exceed next to male counterparts. On set there is a hierarchy so relevant it has created a toxic environment over the years. That is finally gaining media attention from the fruit of. To be apart of the magic, making, crafting, trimming, creating goose bumps and hope. Get the highest of recognition from institutions with most of the population’s attention, for your work. So if you want to be a part of it, bust your ass working hard for no money and eventually maybe we will give you a position but it will be temporary. The voice inside us speaks loud, outside we reek silence because we need the job and if we just hold on a little tighter for a little longer, we know we can work our way over. They think you never seen a Star Wars episode or the Rocky Films, assumes the worst before you can ever answer a question. “Do you need help?” “You got it?” Yeah, it may look like I am struggling and though my arms not as big as what society has equated as strong. It is still capable, I may struggle, but I still get it done. Never suggested for work, while networking because I am not a “buddy”. Veered to roles like Actress, Makeup Artist, and Wardrobe. Weary, approaching a new set and crew, alert to how the order is, how to address them, some can have the ego of a fictional villain. I am not saying it is like this all the time and that all male crew member’s are like this because that would be an absolute lie. I have met an equal amount of great colleagues I’ve worked with and have referred me. Just like any industry you have the good and the bad, yet what still remains the constant, especially in the mid-western region is the lack of women. The solution; just hire more women from a plethora of diverse background to cut the locker room environment. Video and production work is not hard, yes a lot of money and stakes are put in the production from the quick advances in technology video undergoes frequently. However, studies show women are known for having a higher attention to detail, sense of urgency, time management, able to think a few steps ahead, and caring and thinking about the rest of the crew and talent consistently. But, if stepping out of the normal for a creative project is jusy too scary, then we’ll show you. If you can’t already recognize and see the premonition of the future in Video and Media for women as creators and customers, then will make the platform. This is what I had to personally and the reason I have created Milan Arielle Productions, mostly out of necessity, but it will be better this way. While corporations continue to scrounge up a video dude every two years, with bad interpersonal skills and behind on the latest design trends. My platforms will bided on by the competition. To be the boss and trust the creative vision, see the success when put into fruition that would of never been given a chance to. So please if you are in the Detroit area, support a local business that is woman and minority owned, together we can shift the paradigm Top 10: Favorite Woman Hero Characters that is NOT Wonder Woman.
In honor of the release of Proud Mary staring Tariji P. Henson, coming out in theatres tis week, Friday January the 12th. I wanted to create my, ultimate list. My personal Top 10 Favorite Woman Hero Characters that does not include Wonder Woman. A hero; I am talking about someone that goes against the odds works long and hard to do whatever they can to help someone when they need someone to. There is nothing in it for them, but the satisfaction of knowing that someone has been removed from harm and have done the right thing. A real hero in my eyes is someone who does not posses an obscene amount of power, literally, societally, economically, and is of a demographic that has to work harder than others. Yes, like everyone that has seen the new Wonder Woman and Justice League movies I get chills seeing Gal Gadot kick major ass against Gods, Demons, Aliens, and whatever else lives in those worlds. Although, she is not the only badass Woman character that is a true hero, that many Women and girls growing up can look up to as well. My list comprises of the forgotten ones, not the typical names you'd think off the top of your head. True badass, multitasking, caring women that’s struggled a lot but still saves. To rise and be a hero, an extinct character type in cinema these days. I admit, these actresses and the roles they brought to life are the people I looked up to most when I was growing. Who I admired, and dared to act like trying to find an identity, navigating through middle school. Thank God for the Women that just stepped left when they would told to go right. For Tariji fierceness, she is on fire and I definitely admire her from Hidden Figures to now Proud Mary and inspiring this blog post. I can’t wait to see what other characters of woman we will see in the theaters now and beyond, saturating heavier than ever as this movement takes place. But before we go forward we must look back at the queens that have paved the way. Let me present to you my ride or die top 10 badass Women Movie Hero’s. 1. Blade (1998)-N’Bushe Wright as Karen So technically this a comic book, therefore of the superhero genre that we have today, but this film way made way before DC and even Marvel were making movies. Unlike the other two Blade films. The First film, Blade was highly stylized and a one of a kind designer vampire movie of it's time. Vampires, the Zombies of the 90’s. Being before the current social media culture that it has come to be, Blade would be a film that black social media culture would be in uproar over like that have been for the upcoming movie Black Panther. This film was truly revolutionary, in the way that it was filmed, evoking vampire empathy and gory, innovative death scenes. A black hero or super because he is half of what it kills, a dedicated bad motherfucker who occasionally delivers dead pane wit and one liners that an uncle would at a BBQ. Black main female character next to Sanaa Lathan mind you. Instead of an interest she becomes bait and then, the hero. Her confidence and stand up nature is all you have left to ride on towards the end of the movie, when Blade is locked in Vampire ritual contraption. The Brooklyn fighter in her rises to any opposition, even if it’s her ex boyfriend that is now a Vampire and is left in a underground pit with him. Spoiler alert, she does rise, to not only go on and rescue Blade, give him what seems to be a lot of her blood so he can become strong enough to fight Frost and ultimately save mankind from Vampire rule. 2. Resident Evil (2002)-Michelle Rodriquez as Rain I would say that Michelle Rodriquez is solely responsible for portraying an accurate, endearing and captivating perspective of what it means to be a butch or tomboy esque archetype. Strong enough to hold her own and be cast alongside blockbuster actors in blockbuster movies without sacrificing the image she has created solely off her not being woo’d by any bodies’ bullshit. Her backstory is crazy and she really did beat the odds in life and in the big screen to go on to play roles where she saves, wins and most importantly for me. Inspire girls all around the world that you don’t have to be the damsel in distress or a model in a bikini to be an important character in action based TV or Film. Michelle was a HUGE inspiration for me growing up, I even became slightly obsessed with her for a brief period of time but that has since subsided. But it all started with this film, seeing this in the theatres and how she played Rayne I remember shocked sinking my seat cause I want to shout around “who the fuck is the Woman” who roars power yet artistically puts up a façade of mystery and intrigue. I had never seen such a important woman character in a film, not only be one of two female heroes but also act as brute as she did. Completely devout to her job and to her team, but when the rest of her team members doesn't show after splitting up. Rayne steps up alongside Alice to be a leader and hero of the mission to get them out. Even when she gets bit she doesn’t stop till she turns and her death is sad, a fallen solider that fought with honor. Like Blade the subsequent movies to follow Resident Evil based off a video game, another fun new genre. The others just don't compare to the craft achieved in the first one. 3. Coloumbiana (2011) Zoe Saldana as Cateleya Let’s just all give a round of applause to Zoe Saldana. Never I did I think this fiery New York girl in Center Stage would be commanding the characters the define cinema today. Playing leading characters in epic tales where she truly transforms from one to another like a chameleon. A child of the craft, constantly learning and growing, and I think she is just beginning. Not until years from know will we really understand the feat she made as an Afro-Latina Woman all while battling an autoimmune disease. All those fierce woes that she might have had thrown at her to get to where she is today, must have been channeled into the assassin that is Cateleya in Coloumbiana. Haunted by a day that will define her forever, years later, still fighting to find the end of chapter and beginning to a new one. 4. The Matrix (1999) Carrie Ann Moss as Trinity I really don’t think Carrie Anne Moss gets enough credit for her role as the holy Trinity. In her Matrix life she was a criminal hacker, free, she is a top ranking member on the Nebuchadnezzar and front line fighter in the war against the machines. Responsible for helping take Neo out the Matrix and assisting him on a comfortable transition to become The One. Plus how can anyone forget her iconic crouching tiger freeze frame move and line “Dodge This” before shooting an agent with her gun right on his temple without flinching. Though she is the love interest, it is not portrayed in a cheesy or forced way like usual. Trinity may be below Morpheus in the ranks, but she is the chess player. Making the moves for things to actually happen, creating destiny. Doing the uncomfortable for the greater good; basically telling Neo that he is the one and she is his Queen to his King. Only through her words does he realize his true abilities to finally defeat The Agents. Just like a real Queen of a fortress, give the King the strength to lead. 5. The Fifth Element (1997) Milla Jovovich as Leeloo Iconic character that couldn’t of been done by no other than Mila Jovovich. Just as pivotal as Michelle Rodriquez, starring aside her as Alice in Resident Evil. However Milla as Leeloo will go down in history as her best role ever, it was such a gamer changer and nothing has been able to match it. The whole of it, the cast and crew to pull off a stunning feat of blending all the elements one enjoys in a good flick. Showcasing quick adaptability, an innate ability to care and to carry out her purpose in a classic fish out of water scenario. She is the essential, the fifth element, to save us all, from it all. 6. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2000) Zhang Ziyi as Jia Long The dance, discipline, and shear proficiency that defines a culture and film genre that will always be respected for its visionary innovation. It will go down in history as one of the best fight scenes ever to be filmed. Zhang Ziyi and Michelle Yeoh transform a fight into classic ballet story artfully expressing the turmoil between student and teacher. What I love about Zhang Ziya playing Jia Long in this story is the how underestimation plays into the fierceness of her character, because of her perceived innocence. Blending in, following traditional habits, a quiet and reserved nature assists in her reputation, to be the best. This is a all female powerhouse set against beautifully composed backgrounds. Interpreting love and revenge by the ones that rule most of all. I hope that the women of the Qing Dynasty were just as badass. 7. Contact (1997) Jodi Foster as Eleanor Arroway Jodi is a rare bird, a child actor that has been in a number of critically acclaimed films always playing captivating roles. The one that must make sense in a completely horrible and unsolvable situation and come out stronger than ever and saving all she can along the way. In the film Contact, an obsessive scientist that makes contact with intelligent, inter-dimensional and possible extra terrestrial beings. Without sacrificing historic human revelation for the rest of mankind she becomes the sole one to make, contact. Through a spiritual almost psychedelic communication portal. I am glad this was made, and as more girls become interested in STEM education we nee more Eleanor’s to look and make the easy connection between scientist and hero, to show how it can be done. 8. The Cell (2000 Jennifer Lopez as Catherine Deane Before becoming an international pop star to the gays, Jennifer Lopez was a badass yet sassy romantic lead character in notable movies like Out of Sight and Anaconda in the early to mid nineties. Usually with her playing some time of cop or professional, whose ends up falling in love with the protagonist in a messy, round about way. Yet, what bred out of this archetype, was this amazing psychological film with her as the lead protagonist and her love interest; work. A phycology doctor that becomes a hero through advanced technology that allows her to enter into her patients mind. Using her expertise and her natural mothering instincts to gain trust facing the darkest demons of the mind. A professional, seemingly putting her personal life aside, for her job. A hard, intense and important one at and does it with no fear or complaint, just to help. The scene where she whines down watching cartoons and smoking weed was the first time Id seen a woman smoking so normally to decompress. Everything about it makes it a pioneer, even to Sci-Fi shows like Black Mirror. I wish to see more fruit of the woman and men filmmakers inspired by this gem. 9. Death Proof (2007) Rosario Dawson, Zoe Bell, Tracie Thoms as The Girls A movie I still have own on DVD, and itch to watch at least once a year. For me being in the Death Proof world, even from just experiencing it through a 2D screen. Makes me feel a sense of freedom, I’m betting the same feeling cowboys felt rolling from town to town on their horse when the west was wild. Nothing can stop a group of girls, well, maybe some things as Tarantino proves in his own film and I just love it! I love that there are to sets of the female lead characters. Each character is badass and interesting in there own way. I love that the last set of female lead characters are all working as some type of production crew members, right up my alley. I love their dialogue, and I love Quentin Tarantino for bringing this to life, only a crazy white director that has a fetish for strong woman could do it and I am grateful. Finally the damsels bring on the distress when your try to fuck with them. 10. Kill Bill (2003) Uma Thurman as The Bride Another Quentin Tarantino masterpiece, deemed a classic film right out the gate when it was released in 2003. Innovative, taking the revenge genre to a whole other existential level that only someone whose able to grow another human inside of them knows and posses. To become a master among the most ancient cultures not related to her ancestry. Story we've all seen before in The Karate Kid and The Last Samurai, but the Bride perspective has you glued to your seat because her feat seems nearly impossible. It was given to her, she took, conquered and used, to Kill Bill, the father of her child. If this isn’t already known by the unwise; basically don’t mess with a mother and her child, ever. The series also includes just as worthy female opponents and past colleagues played by powerhouse actresses that include Lucy Lui, Vivica A. Fox, Chiaki Kuriyama, and in Kill Bill Vol. 2 Daryl Hannah.
{In 2016 Mudgies underwent some remodeling as well as expansion and added patio space. This was my first impression of the space afterwards. Much has changed since then, however I hope long time or newly converted customers of the sandwich oasis enjoy this article still!} Formerly a corner sandwich shop, that Detroit foodies and downtown dwellers would suggest to visitors or first time Downtown in a while, Detroiters. The place for stacked sammies, giant cookies and wine and beer to go. As the fans grew, it was quickly evident that the place had to expand. In fall of 2016 they finally did just that, but without moving from there charming vintage building nestled in the neighborhood of Corktown. Instead, opting for a full renovation. First changing the entrance to the side of the building, passing the vine climbing art off of Brooklyn St, past what could be your Grandmothers white picket fence and awning. Following up the porch steps and through the screen door. Entering, a breeze from every directions hit’s you as you walk through, noticing a vitalizing shift in atmosphere from before. Sleek, open, and cozy replace the corner New York bodega feel before. The remodel has broken up the space in a way that makes it feel like a brand-new restaurant in a new building. The polished up and improved Mudgies now has everything you look for in a go-to establishment. Like multiple outside seating options while keeping menu favorites. The most noticeable difference is the fully stocked bar prepped with fresh syrups and juices replacing the ol’ watery soda gun that’s way to prominent behind bars. Bistro seating accompanies the bar area for more indoor seating options alongside the open dining room from before. It also seems to be two separate kitchens, one for carryout and one for dining guest. A solution for a quicker time till your delicious sandwich will be sitting in front of you, a huge difference in this aspect. One last feature to mention is an impressive wine wall to the right when you enter, even the biggest wino in the city would be able to select a different wine to pair perfectly with every sandwich on the menu, or entrée, off there after 5pm menu. Intact before renovations, is now vamped up with vibrant harvest options for the current season. With the open floor plan Mudgies is able to further display it’s sense of style, which it always had. Seen in the handcrafted wooden bar, antique pictures and mini gourds from Eastern Market that decorate the surfaces. All the additions have really opened up the clientele more than I’ve seen before. From wine and cheese aficionados, business professionals on lunch meetings, to an artist’s co-working space and place young people take their parents when in town. Definitely a must to check out what has taken a lot of work, all summer and what they are still hustling to finish sewing up the last few seams of. To redefine sandwiches in the D, in a comfortable and inspiring setting that makes you want to hang loose, stay for a while, and maybe talk politics with a stranger. This new Mudgies could possibly turn into a true Detroit staple comparable to Zingermans’s of Ann Arbor, as the go to lunch spot in the city for guaranteed great food. |
